Minutes of the March 4th, 2009 Meeting

of

The Morris County Fire Prevention Association

The meeting was called to order at 10:10 AM by President Michael Pellek, who welcomed all -- 17 in attendance. There followed a flag salute and a moment of silence for those gone before us. Mike postponed the regular agenda so that we could have a presentation from Geoff Nelson, an insurance company representative, who presented a power point presentation first developed for Fireman’s Fund Insurance.  “Ensuring Commercial Cooking Safety During Tough Economic Times” was well received.  If you have questions concerning cooking safety Geoff encouraged us to contact him at 201-412-5257 or gnelson@ffic.com.

Vice-president Dennis Lonagan reported that he and Phil Wilk will go to the Middlesex Fire Academy later this month to take the Train the Trainer training course required by the state as the representatives of the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy.

Secretary Babcock gave his report mentioning a note he received from Rich Silvia, the NJFP&PA Northern Region Vice-president, who could not make today’s meeting because he is in Atlantic City for the Arson Seminar.  Craig also mentioned that he would attend the NJFP&PA meeting on the 5th of March and that he would like to take the check for membership with the five applications we are entitled to with him.  Since Rich Heimbeck is quite ill we need a fifth member in addition to the Executive Board.  Phil Wilk volunteered and was selected by those present.

Treasurer Marty Reynolds gave his report.  A motion to accept the report was made seconded, and approved.

The State Report was given by Paul Elenio.   Not much has changed.  There is no report attached.  Paul was asked if there was still movement to change our “certificates” to “licenses.”  The simple answer is no.

Forest Fire Service is planning prescribed burns in Roxbury and Jefferson Townships soon.  They will give notification before causing smoke on the horizon.

New Jersey Fire Prevention and Protection Association – Craig reported that there was no February meeting thus no report.  The next meeting is March 5th at 10:00 AM at the Middlesex County Academy which he will attend.

Vinnie Corsaro reported that Safety Town meetings are planned for later this month to buy the trailer and finalize site selection.

Barry Howard, our Web Site Coordinator, reported that the web page has been paid for the next two years.  He thanked Craig for promptly sending him membership updates and minutes. Send photos to him and he will put them up on the site.

Dave Barter reported from the County Fire Marshall’s Office that they have made significant Knox box progress.

Tom McIntyre went over the parts of the New Jersey Register that applied to us.  There were no significant changes.  He also made printed copies available to those present.

Poster Contest judging will occur at the next meeting.

Old Business:

Marty Reynolds reported that the new 6 foot blue-with-gold-letters Association banner has been ordered and that they are making it.  We continue to await delivery.  He will check on it.

New Business:

President Pellek reported that Ed Nunn form Madison told him that he would like to be more involved and could we hold a meeting at his new fire station.  The Christmas Party will be held there in December.

Barry Howard asked if anyone was taking insurance information as part of business registration so it can be used as leverage – “abate your violations in 30-days of we will notify your insurance company.” No one said they were but agreed it was an exceptional idea.

Paul Elenio suggested taking a digital picture of the placement of deep fat fryers in there proper locations so that when you go back each time you can use it as a reference to be sure the business is staying compliant with original approved designs.

Good and Welfare

Denise Lonagan, Phil Wilk, and Craig Babcock brought to our attention that Rich Heimbeck was in Morristown memorial for two weeks with heart and vision problems.  He is home now but still not well.  Craig will send a card on behalf of the Association.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:27 AM.

The next meeting is Wednesday April 1st at 7:30 PM at the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy. This meeting will include the Poster Contest Judging.
