Minutes of the April 1st, 2009 Meeting

of

The Morris County Fire Prevention Association

The meeting was called to order at 7:36 PM by President Michael Pellek, who welcomed all -- 16 in attendance. There followed a flag salute and a moment of silence for those gone before us. Mike noted the 3 handouts he brought to share – a catalog ad for a no-battery smoke detector, the nightclub update from the division, and a copy of the Juvenile Firesetter Prevention Council Meeting Minutes.  President Pellek welcomed Rich Silvia to the meeting.  He is the Northern Region Vice-President of the NJFP&PA.

Secretary Babcock gave his report, mentioning that he had hand carried our membership applications and check to the March 5th executive board meeting of the NJFP&PA at the Middlesex County Fire Academy.  Everyone present is receiving Craig’s email with the exception of new member who will be added.

Treasurer Marty Reynolds gave his report.

The Treasures report was approved on a motion by Pete Schroeder, seconded by Jim Miller.  Marty mentioned that the check to the NJFP&PA has cleared and that the amount of last year’s check, which never cleared, has been reentered into the checking account.

A motion made by Jim Miller, seconded by Jim Henderson, for the treasurer to pay the bill for our new banner, passed.

The State Report was given by Paul Elenio.   The report is attached and contains much important information.  Paul also noted that everyone is expected, since the February 1st adoption of the NJ Edition of the IFC, to foster their relationships with their local fire sub-code and construction officials. He also pointed out that the no-battery smoke alarm seen in the catalog ad clearly does not meet the code.

County Fire Marshall’s Office:  Fire Marshal Scott DiGiralonmo distributed hard copies of the power point presentation his office recently provided vendors. This briefing provides the guidelines and permit applications needed for the use of tents in County Parks and facilities.  Contact his office if you would like a copy.  Dave Barter reported that that all county Knox boxes are up and operational.  Check the County buildings in your jurisdiction.

New Jersey Fire Prevention and Protection Association – Rich Silvia, the Northern Region Vice-president spoke extensively about the activities of the Association.  Among them the Association will be providing us with form letters to be sent in support of residential sprinklers, the New Fire Inspectors course will be 120 hours – 90 hours classroom with the remainder split between field and ride along time -- and all Fire Safety Posters must be in the Springfield Fire Station by April 14th.  Rich stressed that if he could be of help to any of us we should feel free to contact him by email at rsilvia@saddleriver.org or by cell phone at 201-726-3895.  Rich left applications for membership with the Secretary.

Mike Pellek reported for Vinnie Corsaro on Safety Town. The committee met with the architect and they have agreed to develop the site first, planning the paved areas and such, before purchasing the trailer.

Fire Safety Golf Outing – President Pellek reported that we have lost the provider of the hole-in-one car since the business has closed.  Anyone with an idea of an alternative please contact him directly at pellekm@roxburynj.us.
