DIVISION OF FIRE SAFETY MONTHLY UPDATE

Morris County
Fire Prevention Association

July, 2005

" Susan Bass Levin resigned as Commissioner of DCA.   Charles Richman has been appointed as "Acting" Commissioner.

" As a result of recent retirements, Lou Kilmer has been appointed as the Chief of the Bureau of Fire Code Enforcement and Paul Allen has been appointed the acting Chief of the Bureau of Fire Department Services.

" The next NJ Fire Safety Commission meeting will be held on July 20th at the Beach Haven Emergency Operations Center.

" The next County President's meeting is scheduled for August 5th at the Middlesex County Fire Academy.

" The DFS has initiated the new Disability Emblem Program.  An announcement was sent to all FD's, LEA's, PD's, and EMS units statewide.

" Only 90 fire departments out of 500 have logged onto and received authentication codes for access to the Office of Counter-Terrorism alerts and notices.  This is after two reminder notices.  FD's signed a contract binding them to use this PC for this purpose.  Failure by the end of the summer to complete the logon procedure will result in the DFS taking back the PC.  Additionally, this makes it very difficult for us to fight for additional homeland security funds.

" The Fire in New Jersey Report has been published and is in the process of being mailed.  It covers the years 2001 through 2003.  It is also on the DFS website.

" The six cascade vehicles for the UASI counties have been ordered.  A preconstruction meeting was held at the beginning of the month.  The vehicles should be delivered in late December, early January.

" The Delmar Recruit Firefighter Training proposal appeared in the July 5th edition of the New Jersey Register.

" Due to the terrorism attacks in London, the New Jersey Weekend was cancelled by the USFA.  We are not sure if it can be rescheduled this year.

" The DFS is still in need of part time inspectors.  If interested in part time work please contact the Division's Personnel Officer, Marylain Kemp, at 609-633-6106.

" The DFS received smoke detectors from WABC through Operation 7 Save-A-Life.  If you are interested in receiving detectors please e-mail Charlie Luxton at cluxton@dca.state.nj.us.

" If you move, remember to let us know.  Contact the Training and Certification Unit at (609) 633-6321.

" Reminder to report all fire fatalities to DFS as required by the regulations.  Additionally, any injury or fatality that occurs to a firefighter in the line of duty MUST be reported to the Department of Labor with 8 hours regardless of time through 1-800-624-1644.
