DIVISION UPDATES – May 2011

 

·         Bulletin 2011-1 (see attached) has been issued and explains the application of the regulations to in-house employees and the inspection and maintenance of fire protection equipment, including portable fire extinguishers.  If you have any questions, please contact the Contractor Certification Unit at (609) 984-7860.

 

·         There will be an EMS Regional Conference held Sunday, May 15th, 2011 from 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM at Randall’s Island FDNY Training Academy.  Topics include 2010 AHA guidelines and recognizing excellence in resuscitation.  To register go to www.fdnyfoundation.org or for more information contact Marc at (718) 999-5179 or hemlem@fdny.nyc.gov.

 

·         The Arson/K-9 Unit has procured a new K-9 named Ashes.  This K-9 will be the eventual replacement for K-9 Taz who is currently being treated for cancer.  Ashes has been assigned to Fire Investigator Rod Meyer and will cover the southern part of the state.  He is a two-year old Black Labrador Retriever.  Investigator Meyer and the other K-9 Handlers of the Unit, Stephen Letts and Jeff Silver are training Ashes under the supervision of Master K-9 Trainer Dennis McSweeny, Atlantic City PD (Ret.).  Upon completion of training, Ashes will be certified in 25 different ignitable liquids and also tobacco products.  The tobacco training is part of a joint effort between the US BATFE and the NJ Department of Treasury's Criminal Investigation Unit to combat the illicit tobacco trade in the state.  Ashes will also obtain national certification in ignitable liquid detection from the US Police K-9 Association.  Training is anticipated to be completed by the end of May.  Until that time, K-9 Taz remains in service.

 

·         Just a reminder to send in your NFIRS data to the state.  Also, if anyone needs NFIRS assistance, the DFS NFIRS Field Representatives can come out to your firehouse to assist you with NFIRS reporting.

 

·         The ABC 7 Save-A-Life smoke detectors have arrived at the warehouse in Carteret and a pick-up schedule will be forwarded via e-mail to fire departments and fire prevention bureaus within the Channel 7 viewing area (all counties north of Burlington).  Pick-ups will be as in years past will be one per month.  Fire departments will be required to contact Charlie Luxton via e-mail cluxton@dca.state.nj.us to arrange for a pick-up. Contact information will be included in the schedule and e-mail.  Kinder Morgan policy has not changed.  Fire department members will be required to be in uniform and have a marked vehicle to enter KM property.  If this requirement is difficult for some, they can contact Charlie for an alternate method of delivery.

 

·         There will be a basic Juvenile Firesetter Awareness class held at the Essex County Police Academy on Saturday, June 4th only 8 students have signed-up so far.  If you need further information please contact Charlie Luxton at cluxton@dca.state.nj.us.

 

·         The New Jersey Weekend Program at the National Fire Academy will held be on June 11-12, 2011. ·         “FIRE IS” New Jersey Educator Symposium will be held on May 17, 2011 at  Kean University- Kean Hall, 1000 Morris Avenue, Union, NJ.  This course will provide fire service professionals with a comprehensive overview of the “Fire Is” fire safety education curriculum. The goal of this program, is not only reaching middle school-aged children as they begin to understand fire, but their parents/guardians and care givers as well. The curriculum is centered on a home-based learning system employing television, the internet, and public volunteers to put a new face on fire safety (also see page 29 of spring catalog for additional course offerings).

 

·         North Hudson Regional Fire Department and the Hudson County Fire Prevention Association are partnering with the DFS to present the National Fire Academy/FEMA Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Specialist 1 program in Hudson County on May 23rd and 24th.  This class is open to members of NHRFR and the Hudson County Fire Prevention Assoc.  Once they have taken the spots they wish, we will gladly register others from out of Hudson County on a space available basis.  Class size will be no more than 30 students.  There will be no charge to attend this class. Coffee and lunch will be provided each day by our partners in Hudson County.  Registration will be through Amy Tanski at the Harrison Fire Department and secretary for the Hudson County Fire Prevention Association. ·         There are several ICC National Certification Examinations and FEE66 Fire Inspector I Based on 2006 International Codes testing for new inspectors scheduled.  The next tests will be held on Saturday, June 11 2011, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM at Bergen County Fire Academy (Law and Public Safety Institute, Police, Fire & EMS), 281 Campgaw Road, Mahwah, NJ 07430, Saturday, September 10 2011, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM at Monmouth County Fire Academy, 1027 Hwy 33 East, Freehold, NJ 07728 and Saturday, December 10 2011, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM at Somerset County Emergency Services Training Academy, 402 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough, NJ 08844.  The cost of the exam is $180.  The information bulletin may be obtained from ICC at www.iccsafe.org/exams or call 1-888-422-7233, ext. 5524.  This information will also be posted on the DFS Website at www.state.nj.us/dca/dfs.
